“^” is the function “to the power of”. So, 5^1 = 5. 5^2 = 25, 5^3 = 125 and 5^4 = 625. He *told* you the answer, 5 = 3125 because 5^5 *=* 3125. But, is he being logical? Is he mixing questions and being tricky again? Or, are *both* answers right depending on the context!

Pay attention: You can raise any number to the power of any other number. That’s the “x^y” key on your calculator. X^2 means to square a number. Raising a number to the power of 1 gives the number itself. Thus, 5 raised to the power of 1 is (ready for it? Drumroll…) 5. Thus, 5 squared is 5 raised to the 2cnd power and is equal to 25. So, if the squence is “1=5, 2=25, 3=25, 4=625″, then 5 raised to the 5th power is 3125. That was Erics *first* answer (did you catch it?). (1 of 2)
(2 of 2) Outside of logic puzzles like that that you might see on simplistic IQ tests, it’s *also* true that 5 equals 5. So, both answers are right. But, IN CONTEXT. Eric is a sly devil and his puzzles always have a left handed monkey wrench to digest, mentally ;)
